Welcome

Prelude

~God Calls Us to Worship Him~

Call to Worship

Pastor
Let us call upon the one who saved us, not because of works done by
us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing
of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.

Hymn And Can It Be That I Should Gain (455)

~God Renews Us in Christ~

We Corporately Confess Our Sin and Need Psalm 51:1-17

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against
you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so
that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your
judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my
mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop,
and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me
hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in
me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me
not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing
spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will
return to you. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my
salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O
Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. For you
will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased
with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a
broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Pastor
And what is God's gospel promise?

Congregation
To forgive our sins and give us eternal life by grace alone because of
Christ's one sacrifice finished on the cross.

Pastor
How does baptism remind you and assure you that Christ's one
sacrifice on the cross is for you personally?

Congregation
In this way: Christ instituted this outward washing and with it gave
the promise that, as surely as water washes away dirt from the body,
so certainly his blood and his Spirit wash away my soul's impurity, in
other words, all my sins.

Pastor
What does it mean to be washed with Christ's blood and Spirit?

Congregation
To be washed with Christ's blood means: that God, by grace, has
forgiven my sins because of Christ's blood poured out for me in his
sacrifice on the cross. To be washed by Christ's Spirit means that the
Holy Spirit has renewed me and set me apart to be a member of Christ
so that more and more I become dead to sin and increasingly live a
holy and blameless life.

Pastor
Should infants, too, be baptized?

Congregation
Yes. Infants as well as adults are in God's covenant and are his
people. They, no less than adults, are promised the forgiveness of sins
through Christ's blood and the Holy Spirit who produces faith.
Therefore, by baptism, the mark of the covenant, infants should be
received into the Christian church and should be distinguished from
the children of unbelievers. This was done in the Old Testament by
circumcision, which was replaced in the New Testament by baptism.

Hymn Wonderful, Merciful Savior (CCLI#251645)
Wonderful, merciful Savior;
Precious Redeemer and Friend;
Who would have thought that a Lamb could
Rescue the souls of men,
Oh, You rescue the souls of men.

Counselor, Comforter, Keeper;
Spirit we long to embrace;
You offered hope when our hearts had
Hopelessly lost the way,
Oh, we’d hopelessly lost the way.

Chorus: You are the One that we praise.
You are the One we adore.
You give the healing and grace our
Hearts always hunger for,
Oh, our hearts always hunger for.

Almighty, infinite Father,
Faithfully loving Your own.
Here in our weakness, You find us
Falling before Your throne,
Oh, we’re falling before Your Throne.
Chorus (2X's)
